Crane Fundamentals™ — Level 1

Lifts are happening on your site. But you've never had formal training to understand the risk.

If you're an engineer, supervisor or HSE professional, you've probably been asked to procure a crane, review a lift study, or sign off on a SWMS — and most of the time, you figured it out on the job.

That works, until it doesn't.

Because when something goes wrong, it's you and your team who are exposed.

Most project teams have a process that looks compliant on paper, but nobody in the room who actually understands what's in front of them. Crane Fundamentals™ closes that specific gap.

What Crane Fundamentals™ actually does

Not so you can do the crane company's job. So you understand what they're doing on your behalf.

Crane Fundamentals gives you the practical knowledge to understand crane operations from planning through execution — how cranes work, how they're selected, how lift plans are built, and what questions need answering before the hook goes up. Not so you become a lift planner. So you can review a plan with real comprehension and make decisions based on understanding, not assumption.

What you'll be able to do
  • Understand crane terminology and industry language
  • Identify major crane types and their applications
  • Interpret load charts and crane limitations
  • Understand how crane companies size and select cranes
  • Assess site constraints that affect crane selection
  • Read lift plans with real confidence
  • Understand lifting hazards and safety requirements
  • Conduct crane inspections with greater confidence
  • Identify common red flags before they become problems
  • Ask better questions and get better answers
  • Procure the right crane for the task
  • Understand rigging fundamentals and load distribution
The program

55+ lessons across 6 core modules — plus industry electives.

Module 01
Crane Basics
Crane terminology, crane types, stability principles, and core crane components. The foundation professionals use every day — and that most project teams never get.
Module 02
Crane Selection & Load Chart Logic
How crane selection actually works. Site constraints, crane sizing, load charts, geometry, mobilisation requirements, and how to read crane capability from a manufacturer's chart.
Module 03
Mobile Crane Deep Dive
Practical knowledge of mobile cranes — boom configurations, outriggers, counterweights, attachments, and site setup requirements. Including Frannas and the specific risks they carry.
Module 04
Australian Safety Essentials
Lifting hazards, competency requirements, HRWL certifications, lift assessment levels (standard and critical), and what the regulatory framework actually requires from project teams.
Module 05
Below the Hook
Rigging fundamentals, load weights, centres of gravity, rigging selection, and working load limits. The part of the lift most engineers know least about.
Module 06
Industry-Specific Electives
Specialised lifting scenarios including tower cranes, wind turbine component lifts, Frannas in pick-and-carry operations, and powered mobile plant. Choose what's relevant to your project context.
